Confirmation:

Confirmation is traditionally celebrated with students when they are in 8th grade.  We also offer a high school confirmation class for older students that would like to be confirmed.  Preparation for Confirmation is a 2 year commitment and includes; class attendance, Mass attendance, a retreat experience, completion of a letter to the Bishop, completion of candidate and sponsor journals, and service hours.  Please see “Preparation Requirements” for more detailed information.

A student must attend one year of classes here at St Catherine’s prior to the year they will be celebrating a sacrament.  The first year of class participation is considered “Level I Sacramental Prep.” The second consecutive year of class participation involves more detailed sacramental preparation.  This is referred to as “Level II Sacramental Prep.”

The traditional grade level for a student to celebrate Confirmation is 8th grade so students would need to be enrolled and attend classes in 7th grade. 8th grade students that have not attended 7th grade classes will be enrolled in a “Level I Confirmation Prep class” using the Faith First book “Jesus in the New Testament.” Some 7th and 8th graders may be in a combined grade level class.  Students can attend a 7th grade summer class to meet the requirements for Level I Confirmation Prep.

We also welcome high school students that have not celebrated Confirmation to join our High school Confirmation program.   A high school student that has not attended classes and would like to be confirmed would need to attend LifeTeen/LifeNights for one year (30 hours) prior to the year they would be enrolled in High school Confirmation classes.  Students in grades 8 and above will all use the “One Eight” Confirmation program for Level II Confirmation Prep.

The reason that we require a two consecutive year program is because celebrating a sacrament should involve becoming familiar and comfortable with our parish community. Class participation is an important part of our program.  Students that attend our classes have the opportunity to meet peers and share their faith, work in small groups, become familiar with our facility, and take class visits to the church.  They will also experience opportunities to meet our priests, develop relationships with catechists, learn how they can become involved volunteering at the church, and enjoy the benefits of a structured classroom setting.

These changes are in effect for the 2011-12 school year. Students entering 8th grade this fall are not required to attend classes one year prior to celebrating a sacrament.  But, students in 7th grade this fall will need to be enrolled in classes THIS fall for Level I Confirmation Prep in order to celebrate Confirmation in 8th grade.
